Food Safety

Ian headed two key residues testinglaboratories in the UK and NZ, chaired the UK government’s Pesticide Residues Committee and sat on the NZ Food Safety Advisory Board. This has given him significant insight into regulatory toxicology related to food safety.

Ian’s consultancy work in food safety has been twofold:

  1. Advising on residues of pesticides, veterinary medicines and environmental contaminants in food, and carrying out consumer risk assessments.
  2. Advising government departments via advisory committees and working groups on population-level health effects of compounds added to or contaminating food or the environment.

Ian was appointed special advisor to the Environment Court of New Zealand in 2019 to assess the population-level risk of benzene from the petrochemicals industry.

Who Ian provided this service to

Ian has advised companies on the health effects of residues, including Synlait Milk Ltd NZ and Holmdale Farm Ltd NZ. He also advised Dyson UK on the health effects of compounds used in the manufacture of their vacuum cleaners.
